Fourth of July in Charleston, South Carolina

We have owned our travel trailer for less than a year, and I’m still conflicted about the best way to travel. For the most part, we have tried to see as many places as we can, not really staying in one place too long. But every once in awhile I wonder if it’s best to have one destination so there is time to see everything that place has to offer. Charleston is one of the places where we just needed more time. There is so much to do!

We arrived in Charleston on July 3, 2021. We stayed at a KOA on the west side of town. As you can see, it’s been around awhile! The phone still works!!

That afternoon we drove into the historic part of the city, scoping out a place to see the fireworks. We were so impressed with the historic beauty of Charleston. We really had no idea where we were going but saw the City Market (which was closing up for the day), Rainbow Row, and The Battery.

Near the end of the day we ended up at Patriot’s Point. By the time we got there the only tours available were a dinner cruise and helicopter tours. It was so much fun watching the helicopter take off and land, but we never even considered riding. Now I wish we had!

The next day we met Al’s sister and brother-in-law for a BBQ lunch. I thought it would be typical South Carolina BBQ, but it wasn’t. It was still super yummy!

We had two things on our agenda: take a carriage tour of the city and watch some amazing fireworks. We accomplished both!

There are so many horse drawn carriage tours and I really don’t know of any differences between them. We ended up choosing Palmetto Tours mostly because it was close to where we found a place to park.

I highly recommend taking one of these tours. I would love to go again! We had so much fun and learned a lot about the city of Charleston and it’s colorful history.

We decided during the tour that a visit to the City Market was our next stop. It was just a short walk, but it sure was hot and humid. It was so hot and humid that my sister-in-law and I were forced to get the cutest straw hats at the City Market. It was a matter of health and safety!

We had no definite plan on where we should watch the fireworks, and parking was premium! We ended up at Charleston’s Waterfront Park, mainly because we found parking and a bathroom! Fortunately, it turned out to be a great place!

The fireworks are actually launched from Patriot’s Point, so you might get a more spectacular view from there. However, we had a pretty amazing view from where we were sitting!

There are still so many things that we want to see and do in Charleston, so I know we will visit again. Hopefully we will stay a little bit longer next time!
